Night Rating
Take your flying further with a Night Rating. This qualification allows holders of a Private Pilot Licence (Aeroplanes) – PPL(A) or a Light Aircraft Pilot Licence (Aeroplanes) – LAPL(A) to fly under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) at night. It provides greater flexibility in planning flights beyond daylight hours while building the confidence to manage new challenges safely and legally.

Flight Training
The Night Rating requires at least 5 hours of night flying, completed in progressive stages within 6 months of starting.
1. Familiarisation & Instrument Skills

Refreshing core manoeuvres with sole reference to instruments.

Practising transitions between visual and instrument flight.

Recovering from unusual attitudes using instrument indications.
-
Introduction to the use of radio navigation aids during night operations.
2. Circuit Training & Approaches
-
Developing safe night take-off and landing techniques.
-
Practising circuit patterns and approaches using both visual and instrument guidance.

Handling emergency scenarios, including simulated engine failures and aerodrome lighting malfunctions.
3. Solo Night Flying
-
Completing at least five solo take-offs and landings by night to consolidate skills.
4. Night Cross-Country Navigation
-
Dual navigation training at night, including a cross-country flight of at least 50 km and a minimum of 1 hour airborne.
Total Duration - 5 hours of flight time at night, which must include:

3 hours of dual instruction with a qualified instructor.

1 hour of cross-country navigation (dual instruction) – must include a flight of at least 50 km (27 NM).

5 solo take-offs and 5 solo full-stop landings at night (these are circuit-based).
